Helge Artelius

Helge Andreas Artelius, born October 28, 1895 in Sundsvall, Medelpad, died October 28, 1989 in Engelbrekt, Stockholm City , Uppland.
Helge was a Swedish artist.

He married June 23, 1927, with Gullan Artelius.

Artelius studied at the Higher Art Industrial School 1913-1914, and at the Academy of Arts 1919-1925. He was awarded a Chancellor's Medal from the Art Academy during his studies.

He has mainly done illustrative work for books, Christmas magazines and magazines for Bonniers and Åhlén and Åkerlund. During the 1910s, he starred in the jokes magazine Kasper with drawings and word games. He became perhaps best known for his paper decorations and bookmarks with angels, tomes and red-headed children, often used as Christmas decorations. As an illustrator he has, among other things, illustrated Selma Lagerlöfs Christmas stories and Jeanna Oterdahl's Schoolmates.

His art consists of portraits and still life in oil, tempera or watercolor.

After his passing in 2009, the exhibition Tomts, angels and happy children was organized at the Jönköping County Museum and Kerstin Bergengren and Anne-Marie Jacobsson wrote the richly illustrated book about his painting and life Artelius 2008.
